The 10 Steps of Korean Skin Care

Anyone who starts to get involved with Korean cosmetics will inevitably soon come across this expression: the famous (sometimes infamous) 10-step routine. So that you understand what it is all about, here is a short introduction to the program that many Korean women do up to twice a day. In terms of their care effect, the Korean cosmetic products build on one another according to this system and thus develop their optimal effect for your skin. But don't worry: ultimately, you have to discover for yourself how much care is actually good for your skin and develop a personal routine!

This skin care routine takes a little time, but maybe you can see it as a few minutes a day where you pamper yourself and do something good for yourself, even in the stressful moments of the early morning.

How does the 10 Step Korean Skincare Routine work?

Step 1: Remove makeup
In the ten steps of Korean facial care, there are two steps for a good facial cleansing. The first is based on an oil-based cleanser, i.e. cleansing oil or an oil-based cleansing balm, which is gently massaged in to remove all makeup.

Step 2: Facial cleansing
Now apply a mild facial cleansing lotion and wash it off using circular movements. This also stimulates circulation and blood flow to the skin.

Step 3: Peeling
If you have oily skin or clogged pores, you can apply a gentle peeling. However, when it comes to this step, “less is more”. It is sufficient to apply this step once a week. If you have dry or sensitive skin, it is recommended that you skip this step.

Step 4: Toner
Now we come to two very important products in Korean facial care: The toner or "refresher" refreshes and soothes the skin. It prepares the skin for the next care steps and is milder than normal facial toners, which often dry out the skin a lot. The toner is often lightly tapped into the skin.

Step 5: Essence/ Emulsion
The essence or emulsion is often referred to as the heart of Korean skin care. It has a light texture and provides a lot of moisture. It also prepares the next steps and accelerates the skin's cell renewal. It is massaged in lightly and should be well absorbed.

Step 6: Sheet Mask
A very popular product is the sheet mask, which is simply placed on the face and left to absorb for 15-20 minutes. There are countless product variants for all kinds of skin problems and special care. It can be used once, several times a week or even daily, preferably in combination with the peeling.

Step 7: Serum
The serum, also called ampoule or booster, has a higher viscosity than the essence. These products provide an extra portion of care for different skin needs.

Step 8: Eye Cream
Since the skin around the eyes is the thinnest skin on the body, wrinkle formation should be particularly combated with a particularly nourishing Korean eye cream.

Step 9: Cream
The richer Korean face cream completes the care process and is designed to lock the other ingredients into the skin. It also provides enough care at night so that the skin can regenerate and the complexion is clear and fresh the next morning.

Step 10: Sun Protection
Unlike us Europeans, Korean women want to maintain a pale complexion and therefore always apply a Korean sunscreen at the end of their daily routine. This is also highly recommended for us in order to stop the skin aging process caused by sun exposure.
