Hyaluronic acid revolutionized skincare with its unique ability to bind moisture at a molecular level, providing long-lasting hydration even in deeper layers of the skin. This ingredient is considered a universal anti-aging molecule, promoting both immediate plumping and long-term skin health.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (히알루론산) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in our connective tissue, joints, and especially in the skin. This sugar-based compound acts as the body's own moisture reservoir and makes up about 50% of the total hyaluronic acid in the human body, particularly in the skin. However, with increasing age, the body's own production decreases continuously—starting as early as age 25, we lose about 1.5% of our hyaluronic acid reserves annually.

In cosmetics, a distinction is made between different molecular sizes of hyaluronic acid. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid (1,800–2,000 kDa) forms a protective film on the skin's surface, while low molecular weight variants (50–200 kDa) can penetrate deeper into the epidermis. These different molecular weights allow Korean formulations to create multidimensional hydration.

The special structure of hyaluronic acid makes it an ideal skincare ingredient: its spiral molecular chain can flexibly enclose water molecules, forming a gel-like network that plumps and smooths the skin from the inside out.

This is how hyaluronic acid works on your skin

Intensive hydration

The primary effect of hyaluronic acid lies in its exceptional water-binding capacity. A study by Pavicic et al. (2011) in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showed that as little as 0.1% hyaluronic acid can increase skin hydration by 96%. The molecule acts as a moisture magnet, attracting water vapor from the surrounding air and storing it in the skin.

Plumping anti-aging effect

The water-binding effect creates a plumping effect that visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Research by Goa & Benfield (1994) documented that topically applied hyaluronic acid can improve skin elasticity by up to 20% by supporting the underlying tissue and increasing skin density.

Barrier function and protection

High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid forms an invisible protective film on the skin's surface, preventing moisture loss and warding off external irritants. According to a study by Bukhari et al. (2018), this occlusive effect strengthens the skin's natural barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss by an average of 15%.

Wound healing and regeneration

Hyaluronic acid supports natural healing processes by promoting cell migration and modulating inflammatory responses. Meyer & Stern (1994) demonstrated that hyaluronic acid stimulates the production of growth factors and thus accelerates skin renewal.

Antioxidant properties

Recent research shows that hyaluronic acid also possesses antioxidant effects. A publication by Tzellos et al. (2009) documented that the active ingredient can neutralize free radicals and thus counteract premature skin aging.

Who is hyaluronic acid suitable for?

skin type fitness Special advantages
Dry skin ★★★★★ Intensive hydration without a greasy film
Oily skin ★★★★☆ Light texture, does not clog pores
Sensitive skin ★★★★★ Soothes irritations, strengthens the skin barrier
Mature skin ★★★★★ Reduces fine lines, improves elasticity
Combination skin ★★★★☆ Balances moisture in T and U zones

Integration into your K-Beauty routine

Application step: Hyaluronic acid is ideally applied after cleansing and toning, but before heavier serums and creams. In the Korean 10-step routine, this usually corresponds to steps 4-6.

Timing: The active ingredient can be used both in the morning and in the evening. For optimal results, twice-daily application is recommended, as the moisturizing effect lasts approximately 8-12 hours.

Combination guidelines: Hyaluronic acid harmonizes excellently with niacinamide , vitamin C , and peptides . Special caution is advised when combining it with highly concentrated acids – in these cases, application should be staggered or the acid concentration reduced. Application to slightly damp skin significantly enhances the water-binding effect.
